What condition is treated by miraDry® treatment?
Hello, this is Dr. Vic Khanna, and I want to speak a bit about the miraDry® system. In our Algonquin office at Dermatology Specialists of Illinois, we offer treatment for a condition called hyperhidrosis.
Hyperhidrosis is a condition where we have excessive armpits sweating. For certain people, the amount of armpit sweating affects their lives, stains clothes, creates a strong odor, and creates social anxiety.
This condition called hyperhidrosis up till now has had many treatments, but miraDry® offers a potential cure.
Some people may not have excessive sweating, but they may have a strong perspiration odor. That's called bromhidrosis. miraDry® is very effective in treating bromhidrosis as well.
How does the miraDry® treatment work?
MiraDry® is a device where we use energy to disable the sweat and odor glands in the armpits permanently. It's done in the office. There's no downtime, and the patient can walk in and walk out.
We anesthetize the area, and after that, the patient doesn't feel anything during the treatment. The results are immediate improvement is permanent.
How many treatment sessions of miraDry® are needed?
For most people, only a single treatment is necessary. Because with a single treatment, we could reduce the amount of sweating permanently in the armpits by 80%.
We find that about one in 10 patients may require a second treatment, and then they are completely dry in their armpits.
It's been very successful, and overall most patients are extremely appreciative that this kind of an option is available to them.
