Sensus Logo Each year, more than 3.3 million Americans are treated for non-melanoma skin cancers. More than half of new diagnoses are in patients over the age of 60, who may be at elevated risk for surgical complications from medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Dermatology Specialists of Illinois offers an effective, nonsurgical treatment option, called Superficial Radiation Therapy – SRT. Dr. Vikram Khanna is one of only a few dermatologists to offer this technology in the Algonquin area.

Controlled radiotherapy

Radiation treats skin cancer by altering the DNA in abnormal cells. This prevents cancerous cells from reproducing, and eventually destroys malignant skin cancers.

SRT is a low energy form of radiotherapy. It penetrates just beneath the surface of the skin, effectively targeting basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. The cure rate is high, and treatment is effective in areas that don’t heal readily, such as legs or scalp. SRT results in minimal scarring, so it is a good choice for areas of cosmetic concern, including face and nose.

Important points about SRT

When comparing SRT to other treatment options, including Mohs micrographic surgery, consider that SRT is:
  • Painless – Treatment is similar to getting an x-ray.
  • Versatile – SRT can be used on virtually any area of the body. It is well-suited to treatment of skin cancers on the head and neck (including ears, nose, eyelids, and lips) to avoid risk of scarring associated with surgical skin cancer removal.
  • Aesthetic – Treatment preserves healthy tissues adjacent to cancerous cells, for faster healing and aesthetic results.
  • Gentle – Typically 12 treatments over 4 weeks are needed for full resolution. Each session takes only a few minutes and there are no needles, cutting, or downtime.
  • Proven – SRT has been used to treat skin cancers for nearly a century, with current generation equipment providing safe, predictable results.

Patient reviews about Superficial Radiation Therapy

Patient reviews about Superficial Radiation Therapy
Dr. Khanna: Hi Mary, we are here today in follow-up, two months after you are finishing your superficial radiation therapy on your nose for your skin cancer. How do you feel that it went?
Mary: I think it went really well. It was 17 procedures, which at the beginning that was a little scary to me. But it was smooth sailing. He came in, went through the procedure. Every time, it took like 10 minutes, and the results were great.
Dr. Khanna: Yes, let’s zoom in on that, on that spot on your nose here. Wow, looks amazing, can hardly even tell where it is. That’s great; much better than the surgical option, I think, in terms of the scarring, for sure.
Mary: Yes, yes. And that’s why I chose that, the radiation, because of that.
Dr. Khanna: What advice would you give to people who are contemplating more traditional surgical procedures over superficial radiation? Mary: Well, I thought the superficial radiation was so good, because I was worried if we did surgery, what scarring would there be and I am thinking, there’s gotta always be some kind of remark that, but from the radiation, there’s nothing. So, I would highly recommend radiation. I never thought I would be saying that.
Dr. Khanna: Great, the 17 treatments that it took, I mean, that’s something that scares people. Was it pretty fast though and pretty efficient for you?
Mary: It was very efficient. I came early, well, around 8:30 in the morning, got in, got out. The office people, very efficient, very friendly, very nice, and I was out in 15 minutes. So, it was not a problem at all.
Dr. Khanna: It was pretty painless for you too?
Mary: It was very painless.
Dr. Khanna: Great, well, great, Mary, thanks so much for sharing with other patients who might be considering this, this innovative therapy, thank you.

Dr. Khanna: Today is your last day of the superficial radiation therapy. How would you describe your experience?
Patient: Absolutely wonderful. I’m so tired of getting cut and this is a great alternative It was very easy, I would do it again. I would recommend it to anybody.
Dr. Khanna: Oh, that’s great to hear. So, if you liked it, because, was it painful at all?
Patient: No, no, no, no. It was easy, quick, in and out, you know, don’t have all those cutting to worry about.
Dr. Khanna: Do you think, some people might say, “Well, if I can just get it cut out, you know, in one or two—you know, I have to come in one or two times,” and you’ve been through that before, what would you say to those people?
Patient: I would do the radiation treatment. I would take the time and do it, because it’s simple, it’s, you know, it works, obviously, so …
Dr. Khanna: And would you say it was pretty painless then?
Patient: Oh my gosh, no pain at all, not compared to surgery!
Dr. Khanna: Yeah, and I know you’ve been through that many times before.
Patient: Many times
